PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) is a data-link layer TCP/IP protocol used for WAN connections, especially dial-up connections to the Internet and other service providers.  Unlike its progenitor, the SLIP, PPP includes support for multiple network layer protocols, link quality monitoring protocols, and authentication protocols.
